Learn About Each Stone Type

There is a wide variety of both natural and engineered stone countertop materials that are perfect for various home improvement and office renovation projects. Here are some that are the most popular:

Granite

  • Known for its supreme durability
  • Highly resistant to heat, acids, and scratches
  • Comes in hundreds of colors and varieties
  • Speckled appearance that helps conceal seams
  • Smooth, polished surface adds luxury
  • Good for high-use areas like kitchens or tabletops

Limestone

  • Requires regular upkeep since it is porous
  • Better suited for applications not heavy in use
  • Easily absorbs liquids and stains, especially acidic ingredients
  • Needs to be sealed yearly
  • Perfect for those areas where you want to emphasize lighter shades, including grays, beiges, yellows, greens, and browns

Marble

  • In high demand
  • Stylish patterns and luxurious veining
  • Comes in a wide variety of colors and depths to highlight the beauty you want to achieve
  • Porous
  • Susceptible to stains if not properly sealed every few months
  • Not the best stone for high-use areas like kitchens

Quartzite

  • Sometimes confused with quartz
  • Features swirling patterns that resemble marble
  • Polished surface
  • Stands up well to scratches and stains
  • Good alternative for areas like kitchens where you frequently use the countertop

Quartz (Engineered Stone)

  • Not a natural stone
  • Popular engineered stone alternative
  • Mimics the look of real stone, like marble, without the upkeep
  • Highly durable
  • Impervious to chips and scratches
  • Stain-resistant
  • Made with resin
  • Easily customized to fit your countertop design and color palette

Slate

  • Natural sedimentary stone
  • One of the few nonporous counter materials
  • Easy cleaning
  • Does not require sealing
  • Highly stain- and heat-resistant
  • Good alternative for high-use areas like kitchens
  • Tends to have fewer color options
  • Can be brittle and more prone to chipping

Soapstone

  • Metamorphic rock
  • Available in shades of gray, blue, and black
  • Most contain talc, giving them a milky appearance
  • Stain- and acid-resistant
  • Stands up to heat
  • Doesn't need to be sealed
  • Soft material that can be scratched or chipped
  • Better application for bathrooms and offices

Travertine

  • Form of limestone
  • Sedimentary stone
  • Reserved for lower-traffic areas
  • High reactiveness to acids
  • Prone to staining
  • Porous and at risk of scratching
